Renovation Rookies: Our Master Bathroom Remodel

Hi all!  As some of you may have seen on my Facebook page and Instagram, I revealed the transformation of our master bathroom. I want to be able to give you the ins and outs of this renovation and the things we learned along the way and what we would do differently next time.

I will be doing this in a three part series so I am sure not to bore you :P. So make sure to follow along.

This was our first major renovation and looking back on it, all in all it went fairly smoothly. However, now that it is all over we definitely would change a few little things, but it’s all about the learning process right?

We have been in our home almost 6 years. While we have done a lot over the years to make it how we want it, we left the very back of our house, our bedroom and bathroom, last. Then in May, we took the plunge and started on our first major renovation. My husband got it started one day by demolishing this weird niche in the corner of our bathroom, of course he did this while I was gone with one of my girls all day for dance. He has been known to do drastic things while I’m not around, but hey, gotta get started at some point right?

I wanted to be able to have full design control and it was so much fun searching for the right fixtures that would complete the entire look. We used our amazing contractor son/dad team, Adam and Jack. We have known them for at least 8+ years. They were the handymen in our rental and we have always stayed in touch and any thing we need done that is beyond our scope of skill we call them. Once the demo began, there was no turning back!  A little side note, the dust that comes with a demolition makes me twitch like a crazy person. I tried not to let it get to me, but oh my it did!  I just had to remind myself that it was all temporary, as I vacuumed and dusted our room everyday (no joke, I'm OCD).

I always knew that I wanted to have a unique vanity and loved the thought of having a piece of furniture as our sink area.  I searched high and low in all my usual places OfferUp and Facebook Marketplace, and I found the perfect piece. It is a Drexel hutch and was perfect as it had drawers in the middle and then two cabinets on either side which is what I wanted as I knew that would make it easier to do the piping for the sinks without having to cut into drawers if that was the case. Because this piece was a hutch, and I had no need for the top part, I was able to refinish the top case and make it into an adorable piece that I sold. So, I basically got a two for one!  SCORE!  That is one of my favorite things to do - how can I get the most for my money and make nothing into something!

This is how I was able to turn the top hutch into another piece of furniture!

This is how it looked when we bought the piece
